Earlier this month when my hard drive crashed, I replaced it with an SSD drive.

It’s obviously aimed at Apple’s “don’t you dare try to upgrade or repair yourself. WE control all aspects of these machines, and you WILL pay what we say you will” attitude.

Doesn’t letting your kid work on your PC void the warranty?

I have tried to take out hard drives in prebuilt towers – hammers and chisels get involved. I remove drives when I recycle trash them. I put an extra drive in my laptop and that involved removing 29 screws. iFixit is a good place to go if you want to know how to do stuff on your computer.

In later years the iFruit company really got their act together. These days you can’t upgrade an iFruit at all; you just have to buy a new one. Profit!

I’m surprised Andy knew the right ram to get. Getting the wrong type could trash your computer.

Anyone else remember installing chips while sitting on the kitchen floor, holding-on to the drain under the sink, so you didn’t zap ’em with static electricity?

If an iFruit is an Apple, doesn’t it void the warranty to open up the case?

I remember installing RAM and a sound card into my 386-SX long ago before I knew much about computers, how nervous I was. Luckily the patient lived, thrived even after and games were so much better.

One of my jobs as a Computer Specialist involved swapping out a faulty motherboard in a laptop that was not any of the usual ones purchased by our organization. I got the old one partially removed but could not figure out how to release this one spot. In desperation, I Googled how to remove this laptop’s motherboard, and luckily, there was a YouTube video. It was a simple little trick to release some clamp or something, which then had another screw underneath it…

If Jason likes that, he probably hates that Macs are no longer modular at all.
