In 1508, French poet Eloy d’Amerval referred to a Poisson d’avril (April fool, literally “April’s fish”), possibly the first reference to the celebration in France.
After checking with Betty Crocker, I was reminded that an English fool is made of gooseberries and seems safer to make, bake and eat than Piglet’s pork chops and escargot.
