This wouldn’t have happened if they didn’t have the same teacher handing out the same assignments year after year.

Take the case Sunny, and then do like some other lawyers do and charge him an arm and a leg for doing so!

All seriousness here: if it’s an essay Dexter wrote himself then it’s NOT plagiarism, and if the essay is relevant to the assigned topic, then at the very worst it’s laziness. Sure, the teacher expected him to write a new essay, but the goal of an essay is to demonstrate his writing ability and knowledge of the topic – and the older version does that. Granted, it implies that his knowledge and writing skill have not improved at all in the past 3 years, but that’s kind of the opposite of cheating: he’s selling himself short by missing a chance to improve on his earlier work. Lazy? Yes! Bad idea? Yes! But “cheating”? Only himself!
