Well, a lot of things aren’t intuitive and can be be explained only with hard work and a lot of thinking. There’s nothing to suggest that water is a chemical compound of two gasses. The existence of which said two gasses was totally unknown until quite recently (though some experiments with flames going out in enclosed spaces were suggestive). And who would guess that common salt is a compound of two ferociously reagent and dangerous elements? As long as “scientists” worked with the notion that compound substances are merely more or less mixtures of “elements”, there was very little knowledge to be gained from much labor.
I imagine that there are some among us who argue that, since there is nothing about any of that in the Bible, it all must be false and demonic.
