I think the reason so many clerks have to wait for the till to figure change is because it all has to go through the till or it won’t add up properly at the end of the shift.
I know people who tried to work smarter, thinking outside the box, figuring out how to do their job more efficiently, and even getting better customer service reviews. Then they were written up for violating some obscure company policy, or dinged in an audit because of the fine print in the regulations. One even got fired for a “no-tolerance” infraction – this for a behavior that up until that moment had been VERY openly tolerated because everyone worked better that way. If you’re concerned about incompetent workers, look to the employers. They don’t really want smart employees; they want mindless, dependent, and easily replaceable drones.

We see too much of that already and they want to get $15 an hour. Electricity goes out and they can’t figure out what your change should be.
