One time, years ago, my right ear was plum stuffed full. I started going to the rec center steam room daily. A few days later while sitting there all this stuff started oozing. Inserting the pinky I came up with gobs. Went to the shower, for a break from the heat and to wash my goopy finger and let water run in my ear, then back to the steam. I did the back and forth about half a dozen times and was done. I was using a fair amount of olive oil in my salads at the time which caused all the build up. Olive oil is heavy compared to other oils.
Ear wax is secreted by a modified sweat gland. Folks who tend to be heavy sweaters also tend to produce a lot of wax. The ear normally clears itself by moving wax along as you talk or chew. If you have a narrow or bendy ear canal it can block up more easily. Also, wearing hearing aids, ear protectors or anything else you insert into the canal can stop the natural progression and cause a build up of wax. You want some wax in your ear, it helps protect the skin much like wax protects the finish on your car. Using swabs (or bobby pins or anything else) can either push the wax deeper or clean too much out. If you clean it all out, the skin tends to get dry and itchy making you have the urge to stick something in there to scratch, leading to more itching.

Stick your fingertip in your ear and wiggle it around, Monty. Then, slosh the water out! Works pretty well most of the time, I’m told….
