Man: Heart, please remove your hat. Heart: Why? Man: Because we don't allow headwear in the classroom. Heart: Is that Mr. Basner rule or a school rule? Man: It's a Jeffrey can't see the board rule. Boy: That's ok, Mr. Basner, I wasn't paying attention anyways.

It’s also courteous to remove a hat when you go inside.

That rule of etiquette actually applies to men only. Ladies may keep their hats on.

At least Jeffrey is paying attention now! I remember dear old Peppermint Patty of the Peanuts gang actually sleeping in school and getting her hair caught in her binder! My, those strips must have run years and years and years ago… The more things change…

iamtxmilady, the women’s hat rule can depend on situations. In the early days of movie theaters, they often ran cards asking women to remove their hats because the wide brims interfered with the view of patrons behind them. I suspect this is part of why hats fell out of fashion. It became more difficult to deal with them. (Also, if it’s a baseball cap, it comes off indoors no matter who’s wearing it.)
