On a related not, the last K-Mart in Michigan, the home of K-mart and its predecessor, S.S.Kresege, is closing or already has. They will be down to about 12 stores in the country by Christmas or so. “And another one gone, and another one gone Another one bites the dust.”
Ahh yes, K-Mart…. I used to work for them back in the day and it lasted about three years. It closed up of course several years ago.Don’t know if there are any left in the state, but I remember Spokane & Yakima had some big ones. In fact the one where I was atbecame a “Big” K-Mart. Saw many a blue light special while there and even played some music over the P.A. system featuringsongs that had “Blue” in the title, such as “Blue Moon” and the list goes on.. I stocked seven isles of pantry while I was there…As messy as it was, I still loved K-Mart !
during a stint working at a mall my wife used to love to recount how the patrons would nearly break the glass doors down and then literally sprint up the escalators to get to the new year’s day specials first…
(new year’s day is about the closest thing we have to black friday in japan)
Kresge’s which became Kmart was a stable store operation run by the family. When they died off several so called whiz kids took over and within a few short years…the blue light was turned off. Sad, what mis-management can do.
I remember far back as I can (on the edge 60) that the Friday after Thanksgiving was the big shopping day, but I don’t recall the term Black Friday being popular until relatively late in my life.
The passion of the ‘Blue Light Special’ was cooled by the eternal ‘Price Check’ when you went through the check out. I went through puberty during one of these.
I remember the blue light special. They had a cart with a rotating blue light. They would move it near an item for a sudden price drop. When the light was turned most of the customers in the store would stampede over and buy it whether or not they wanted or needed it.
K-Mart was not my favorite place to shop, but I liked the M.O. of their blue light gimmick. It helped to limit the chaos and mayhem which became all too common.

KMart? Are there any left left? The one we had in our town was the last one in the whole state. It closed early last year.

If I must shop on Black Friday, I’ll do it from the comfort of my home.

Two downhill racing companies merging never made sense unless there was some tax incentive.

I wonder if Uncle Ted could tell any stories about the “RED LIGHT” district on Saturdays nights back in the day?

Both Kmart in my town have closed, the last one in 2002 or so. And both buildings are still empty.

Yes- Uncle Ted isn’t too far off on that one.
