My Mother left little gifts of clothing, etc on my pillow throughout the year. My Father picked little flowers from our vast gardens and left them in a little vase on my dresser. I would come home from school and find these gifts from my Parents. Yes, they acknowledged my birthday and Christmas with a few gifts, but did not over do it. They had already shown their love for me throughout the year. I follow in that tradition.
If they were Jewish, they’d be a lot more concerned about the onset of Hanukkah. As the old joke goes, it is always either early or late, but never on time. This year it is quite early; it begins at sundown, tomorrow night, the 28th.
