Funny thing about turkeys flying. The domesticated turkeys have been bred for large breasts and are too heavy to do more than flutter into the air. Wild turkeys fly, and fly very well. They can lift off the ground and climb nearly vertically, much like a very large ruffed grouse, although that is not typical. When I was a teenager, I saw some turkey in the woods about two miles from my home — and people didn’t believe me. Today, I see them flocking on lawns in the subdivision; the restocking efforts have been wildly successful.
Shame Tank isn’t in rural KY with me. There are tons and tons of turkeys available at every grocery store. Granted it’s too late to buy them on a Tuesday when they’re frozen solid to eat on Thursday, but you’d have them.
