Today’s strip reminds me of a scene from the 1944 film noir classic Double Indemnity. Barbara Stanwyck meets her co-conspirator in murder and insurance fraud, Fred MacMurray, in a grocery store while wearing an outfit very similar to Penny’s.
When I worked at a major pet store chain, our uniform shirt was blue, just like Walmart next door to us. It did say “Dog Training Instructor” on the back in big letters though. When I went shopping after work there, I would get stopped often by customers asking questions. I would try to help, if I had any idea. I also got stopped at the grocery store next door on the other side. Their uniform shirts were black and gray plaid. That one confused me, but I would still help, if I could.
Some of my coworkers got smart. They would have a shirt on under the uniform shirt. As soon as they were heading back for a break, Lunch, or to go home, they took the uniform shirt off. That was enough for customers to not recognize them.
Ha….although for me.. I would be out walking my dog and someone would yell from their car “Name of Petstore!”. I was actually in a completely different part of town at a Greek Festival once. It was packed. Someone yelled "Hey Name of Pet store Lady! ". My friends were blown away that people can be so…. “Interesting”. (Sorry, not saying the name of the actual Pet Store. Not sure I can do that? )

Tell them plainly that you MUST clock in prior to assisting. Company policy.

Customers do not care…they want service.

I usually pick up a few things on my way out and since I still have my apron on customers do stop me and ask questions sometimes
It’s good customer service to help them whether I’m on the clock or not, so I do
