Little Baby Jesus knew because, if you believe the myth, he was also God. It was not a surprise, it was a plan. Judas had to betray him otherwise he could not be killed by the Romans and come back from the dead. It was all part of the plan. If not Judas it would have been Mark, Mathew, Luke, John or Fred.
The anecdote about “Las Posadas” being banned by the Pope reminded me about “El Cant de la Sibil·la”, a song that’s sung during the Midnight Mass. It was banned during the Council of Trent, but in Mallorca the priests decided to ignore the orders from the bishops and continued singing it each year until eventually they stopped asking for its suppression (“Don’t worry, next year we won’t sing it” year after year). So it lasted until our days.
