We were told to hold onto the D-ring (the handle for the ripcord) and not let go. If the parachute doesn’t work, you can take the D-ring back to the manufacturer for a full refund.
I went skydiving once 35 years ago. Back then we did not have to be tethered to an instructor. They gave me 6 hours of instruction and let me jump/fall from 3000 feet. My cord was tethered to the plane so it opened automatically 6 seconds after I left the plane. It was thrilling.
I am too afraid to jump out of planes. Talked to someone who did. She said on her first solo jump the parachute did not open properly and wrapped around her. She had been told what to do if that happened and managed to unwrap the chute and deploy the emergency one, landing safely. She said that was her first jump and also her last.
