My first “fast” modem was a 56K X2 USRobotics model that fit into an ISA slot. Thing is, our service provider used Flex, so I couldn’t get it up and over to its advertised speed.

When it finally got to be 56k no matter what you used, then I’d get as fast as 54K. But by then, we got one-way Roadrunner cable internet (that still used a telephone modem to uplink).

Thankfully the term “baud rate” has been banished to the rubbish bin of history.

Someone got ahold of a credit card at a dialup internet provider and replaced the answering modems with 56k modems. The answering system has to be a digital phone connection to go above 28k. A 56k system does not ring before it answers. It just connects. They got it correctly upgraded in a couple of weeks.

This page would have taken 20-30 minutes to download with a dialup modem.
