A foot fault is a foot fault, whenever it takes place. Unless you are playing basketball, then it’s only a foot fault, “travel” if you aren’t any where near the basket or looking to shoot, proving the need for a need for some kind of health care for NBA & NCAA referees’ eye problems.
I’ve never understood why a player starts the serve so close to the line. The advantage a player would get would only make sense if every player was the same height and speed. Tall players (like the Williams sisters) already have a better angle on a serve, and faster players (like the Williams sisters) will already be able to get to the net quicker (and how many serve and volley players are there in women’s tennis?).
So why take the chance on the fault?
You are right on, BIll.
Also, she can’t claim that it cost her the match. It did cost her the chance to win, but that’s all. A person of her talents and strength should not have let the match get away from her in the first place.

Dear Sirs,
May I never do anything so nefarious (real or alleged) as to come into your satirical sights.
