William Tell used a crossbow, not a longbow

At the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum there is a room where they have over 150 Civil War era photos along with a system to find information on each shot. One is of a Union Army Major who died playing William Tell with some Captain. Often wondered if the Captain was trying to create a promotion vacancy.
