I gave my boss my retirement notice and told him that if there’s a layoff during that time, to let me go. That way a younger person could keep their job. They did have a layoff, but didn’t let me go. When I retired, they told me that I didn’t get any severance pay because retiring was considered quiting. If I had been laid off, I would have received two weeks pay for every year worked plus unemployment pay.
