Our Government told us that if Vietnam fell, all of S. E. Asia would follow and China would rule half the World. Our Government lied, and Vietnam has become a trading partner.
Kudos! I’ve been thinking the same, only it’s a country that borders on Russia instead of on a long distant continent. A really weak comparision would be with the Mexican War against a disorganized and incompetent foe lacking decent weapons. Antonio Santa Anna played a huge part. A better one would be the War of 1812 against the British in Canada. At least we finally had a long and peaceful existence with our neighbors to the north, although most Americans have no idea what happens in that country, nor understand their form of government. Hint: Justin Trudeau is not the president. Their Senate is not elected. etc.
“We the unwilling, led by the unknowing, are doing the impossible, for the ungrateful. We have been doing so much with so little, for so long, that we are now able to do anything with nothing!”
I’m a pacifist. I know it’s crazy and won’t ever work, but somehow events keep showing me that war doesn’t work, either. I hope events won’t show me the consequences of nuclear war.
A family friend was a Vietnam war vet who worked with a soldier’s group that helped Russian Afghan vets assimilate back home. Their experience returning from Vietnam to an indifferent population gave them insight into what the Russian soldiers were dealing with. On one of his trips he met a Ukrainian woman and later married her. He moved away to Nashville years ago but I can only imagine what he’d think of the current situation…

Judging by the cover of the book “Lieutenant Dangerous” {bottom of the page} that’s Danziger’s own lighter on the left…

Major difference: the U.S.’s goal in South Vietnam was not annexation; Russia’s goal in the Ukraine is to destroy their sovereignty.

Jeff, what’s your insistence on a Vietnam parallel, when Russia (Soviet Union) has Afghanistan?

With some glaring exceptions, our atrocity count in Nam was a tiny fraction of Putin’s.

The commonality is the U.S. Government treated the Vietnam draft dodgers similar to how Russian is treating the Ukraine draft dodgers.
