Harnesses don’t stop pulling, harnesses stop choking, and tracheal collapse. As a Yorkie owner I’m well aware of just how dangerous a collar can be for some dogs.
As a owner of large dogs over 30+ years, including two German Shepards, we have always used a prong collar on them. And NO it doesn’t hurt the dog, it gets their attention and they stop pulling. We never leave it on the dog when we get home, it’s just for walks. As said above, harnesses are used for actual pulling, not to stop a dog from pulling. We have seen small women get pulled off their feet by even a 40# dog.

Proper training would be a better idea.

what would happen if we just let go of the harness and let it snap?

It’s actually easier for a dog to pull against a harness than against a collar.

Our St Bernard liked to pull
It would have been tempting to hook her up to a cart, but I was always afraid she would be impossible to steer
She was a bit stubborn

Sophie: “But, to be honest, I’m a beggar, not a puller. You want pulling, get a Husky.”

Sophie’s winding up those hind legs. Look out, when she achieves all four paws on the ground. Yip yip yip yip yip
