What’s a customer doing with a hand-held “scanner thingie”? All the stores I’ve been to have them on stands and you put the bar code under them to get the price. The hand-held ones are only used by the store staff.
The facial expressions that the man is able to convey make me want to know more about his life.
He looks like his name might be Charles and I feel like he works at a little restaurant. Based on the things that he seems to be buying, I believe he likes to make pancakes or waffles from scratch (that jug looks to be maple syrup, and that might be a bag of flour next to it).
I believe he’s the sort of guy who, after this interaction would love to make April some of his homemade pancakes/waffles. Not because he has a crush or anything on her, but because this made his day. But he’s not comfortable interacting with people. So he has no clue if offering to make her pancakes/waffles would be considered socially acceptable or not. Most of the time he would err on the side of just keeping quiet.
Perhaps one day Charles will be brave enough to offer to make pancakes/waffles for someone that has made his day. Perhaps on that day, this offer will be accepted.
This reminds me of when I was a dog training is that a chain pet store. It is a little room set in the middle of the store. There are glass windows so people customers can watch what is going on. It is on signs all over that it is for dog training and it is a training class.I lost track of how many times I was doing a class where customers would yell “excuse me! Can you help me?”. My clients would roll their eyes and be patiently quiet as I would explain that we were in a class. The customer would usually not care and say “well I need help”. I would explain that there were people on the floor (there were) as well as the cashiers up front that could even call someone to the floor for them. That I was doing a class that my clients paid for. This confused the customers or got them angry. ;) I also had many try to walk into the class and be angry that the door was locked. I explained that I was doing a class that people paid for and it was private. People are weird.

Just dumb customers and, sometimes, dumber assistants (and ain’t that an oxymoron, as opposed to the usual, run of the mill moron)
