That’s the weird thing about Japan. Money is all off by a factor of 10 (at the least). Store clerks shrug off small change like $10s and $20s, but get more irritated when you buy $10 worth of stuff to break a $100 (think $1 = 100 yen). Conversely, fraud or corporate losses of 1,000,000 yen ($10,000) gets everyone here into a frenzy at the “scope” of the numbers.
I once made a purchase that came to around $23. I handed the clerk a fifty and he said “do you have anything smaller”? So I put away the fifty and handed him a five.
