Tip of the hat to Mr Boreman for knowing that the wee people were solitary, wore red, and fixed shoes. None the less, a leprechaun can be about mischief, so watch yeself.

“The Emerald Isle” was Sir Arthur Sullivan’s last work. He died while composing it, and Edward German had to complete the score. The libretto is by Basil Hood.

No 4. SONG—PROFESSOR BUNN, WITH CHORUS.

    [Arthur Sullivan]BUNN

If you wish to appear as an Irish type

(Presuming, that is, you are not one),

You’ll stick the stem of a stumpy pipe

In your hat-band, if you’ve got one.

    Then no doubt you’re aware

    You must colour your hair

    An impossible shade of red;

    While a cudgel you’ll twist

With a turn of your wrist,

Being careful to duck your head—

    Or your own shille-

    lagh unhappily may

    Accidentally knock you down

    With a fearful crack

    On the comical back

    Of your typical Irish crown!

    If you manage instead

Of the back of your head

To belabour the floor like that—

    And shout “Whirroo,”

    Bedad, you’ll do!

You’re the popular type of Pat!CHORUS

    Or your own shillelagh, etc.

    BUNN

For the innocent joys of a ball or wake

    You probably foster a passion,

For all such things I can undertake.

    To teach the latest fashion.

    First you kiss a colleen,

    Then imbibe some potheen,

Then your coat on the floor you’ll trail,

    And invite the best man

In the room if he can

To tread on its tattered tail—

    With a big shille-

    lagh some truculent neigh-

bour will probably knock you down

    With a frightful crack

    On the comical back

    Of your typical Irish crown!

At a ball or a wake

    It’s yourself that’ll take

Little notice of that at all!

    It’s used you’ll get

    To the strict etiquette

    Of a typical Irish ball!CHORUS

    With a big shillelagh, etc.

    DANCE.
