The media and the judgement of others says you’re clothes are always wrong, no matter what you do or wear, it’s still wrong and the pressure is to fit in with what popluar culture says is right - it’s the worst if you work in an office. That point could not be made by her just reading a magazine, ergo she has to be in a store.
I haven’t read this comic from the beginning, but I do know how funny it is. I read an old book FULL of HILARIOUS Cathy comics and I didn’t stop laughing the whole time. Now, looking at these, I think I agree with the people who say it was funnier in the beginning. These don’t make me laugh like the one’s in the book did. I still like them, though.

Besides, she was probably pulled in from the mall proper by the fast-talking over-eager saleslady – who is trying to make her ends meet.
