Coddling our youth (and ourselves) does little to encourage rational thinking on potential hazards. Our society might not be better off for it in the long run.
I have a motorcycle, and the saying is, “Dress for the slide, not the ride”. I had a small accident last year, and was glad I was all geared up, saved me from road rash and head trauma. But, since this is a bicycle, let’s talk about the accidents that can happen. Just this past week here in Holland, MI, a teenager was on his bike when he was hit by a car. An older man was out on his skates, was hit by a car. Another man on his scooter, hit by a car. If you want to wear the gear, don’t let anyone discourage you.
The protective gear depends on the activity. You probably do not need shoulder and knee pads for a bicycle. Wrist guards would be useful for roller blades or any sport where you would fall and instinctively reach out your hand. Though learning to fall by rolling on your side is very useful. Something I learned after breaking my wrist (Colles Fracture, required two screws to fix).
