He should say he was asking if he really had to do something he doesn’t want to do. Then walk away. Don’t assume the question.

“I was going to ask if you’d like a new car. Yours is looking kind of tired. Oh well. I’ll get one for me instead”.

Mine always began “I was just thinking …. ). Never seemed to complete the sentence, though. Sometimes followed up with “you might die never knowing what a great idea I had.”

Rephrase the questions so that “no” is the answer you seek. “Would you mind if I went golfing?” vs “May I go golfing?”

That is why I’m single.

OK, so don’t ask her if she would like to go out for dinner.

Phrase the question so that no is the answer you want.

Some people are just not good listeners.
