I have two wheelchairs that I found on the side of the road. I figured that someone might need them. Of course, the way things are going, that someone could be me. I wonder if I could add a motor.
Bikes for crippled-up old people do exist: I bought one when I found out the hard way that I’d tracked snow into the kitchen.
It has a drop frame so that you don’t have to lift your foot much to get into the saddle, and the saddle is so low that you can put both feet flat on the ground while firmly seated. The crank is moved forward so that it’s possible to pedal with the seat so low. It’s not easy, but it’s possible.
I could write two pages on how horrible it is as a bicycle — some refer to such bikes as “bicycle-shaped objects” — but being able to exercise my knee without putting any weight on it — and being able to go places without walking — allowed the knee to fully heal in only a couple of months.
My “wheelchair bike” has seen sporadic use ever since, whenever I don’t feel up to walking or I want to take something with me that would be tiresome to carry.
