You can put metal in the microwave. But unless you’re careful, you get Frizzle… zing! Zap! Zot! Ping! Crink!
Now, there are things you cannot put in the microwave: a full sheet of plywood, a big screen tv, your favourite chair, or anything else that’s too big.
What’s really cool?…pop an old cd or dvd in the microwave, set it for 2 seconds, and watch the fireworks display! (wouldn’t recommend doing this too often tho!)
A decent quality microwave shouldn’t have any problem with less than one minute of foil as long as there’s a load (food or water) , or the foil is smooth and unwrinkled. But it is exciting! Ymmv. (Experiment: Place two 3/4" foil balls touching in a microwave. Cover with clear Pyrex glassware. Witness plasma, the fourth state of matter!)

Ever do that?
Not on purpose.
But – according to its instruction manual – you may loosely cover a bowl of food with foil as long as it doesn’t touch the inner walls.
