I read that book as a young girl. Maybe too young in some ways, but it left an imprint anyway. Clearly Steve missed the part where it took the author a couple of weeks and a series of iodine treatments to get to where he had dark enough skin to pass. Or he’s just that impatient.
Or perhaps he missed the reports that the author nearly lost his sight from those treatments and did end up with skin problems for the rest of his life.
