Well, pajama casual is, or was, a bit of a fashion trend. Just don’t sit on a bench near the Psychiatric Hospital too long. Even then, if you play it right you might get a nice breakfast and make a few friends before being found out. Research for your book.
If she locked herself out likely she has a single cylinder springlock in the door knob-can open it from the inside while the latch is still turned to the lock position. Double cylinder door locks-can’t turn the inside knob unless you turn the latch/use a key- are a violation of the fire code. Most springlocks can be opened with a credit card/piece of plastic.
