I once had a boss who worked like that. It wasn’t until after I’d been working for him for about six months that he stayed late one Friday and did a massive clean-up. The next Monday was the first time I found out what color the top of his desk actually was! Of course it wasn’t long before it was fully cluttered again – until the next once-in-a-blue-moon cleanup. But the really amazing thing was that whenever he needed anything, he knew exactly at what depth in which of the myriad piles the sheet he was looking for was and was able to retrieve it instantly.
I once did some work in an office where one of the desks had papers piled 6 inches deep at the center, and it tapered off to about 3 inches at the edge of the desk. And according to his coworkers, if anyone wanted something from him, he knew exactly how to find it!
