Pedantic note: A “drag worm” at the time was people who were homeless by choice and would panhandle along a strip of Guadalupe street by the University of Texas called “the drag.” It’s still called the drag, but I don’t go anywhere along there these days, so I don’t know if there still are drag worms or if they still are called drag worms. I figure there are because a while back, there were homeless kids who panhandled in the area.
I usually deal with beggars the easy way: I always carry some apples or pears (bananas get squished too easily); any beggar who will turn up his nose at a piece of fruit isn’t a beggar at all.
