For shame on older kids who terrorize younger ones with this sort of fear-mongering. And for shame on parents who think the fear instilled is just “kid nonsense” and try to blow it away by stating so.

An older child who repeats this sort of ‘teasing’ should be required to sit in a tub naked in about 3 inches of water, and explain to the younger one that they lied and that there are no such things as drain monsters. Then they should be required pull the plug and stay seated in the tub until it is empty to prove it, as the younger child watches. And it does not matter one whit if they are related or not, or what their ages or genders are.

I had a female early-teen babysitter who tried this with me when I was a 6 yo. I had the good sense to repeat what she had said to my mother. Horrified, Mother got together with the teen’s parents, who agreed to this punishment in their tub and under the supervision of HER mother. That teen NEVER did such a stunt again, and months later we became good friends.

Same punishment for any adult who is cruel enough to tell such tales.
