Couldn’t watch Star Trek with him in the room anymore, and back in the day there was ONE tv in the living room. ‘Course, there were only three channels to argue about.
You’re absolutely right ejcapulet (hey, I know you from Pib!). And my son is living proof of it. But I think this panel was my mother’s response back then…and yeah, Kirk kissing Uhura was big news back then. In the late 60’s she was scorching hot. I’ll bet David Duke would have kissed her…he just wouldn’t have admitted it.
So Pib fans like Bloom County we are an eclectic bunch are we not? But yeah, what is with the changes, can’t they show them here true to the strip. Sometimes this website really sucks!!! Oh well, I don’t pay for it so I guess I better shut my yap.
Truth be told I think the dad is more thinking, “yippeee my loopey son is straight”. Knowing Mr. Binkley he would rathe have his son get busy with a two-headed female alien, because at least she is female.
TobyBartels: But the intro is written in-character by Steve Dallas, is it not? Doesn’t he say he finds the strip generally offensive anyway? My point is, maybe you need to take the intro with a grain of salt? I know sometimes newspapers in certain markets did censor this strip, but I really do wonder if sometimes BB didn’t change something after the fact to make it (in his opinion) better. Somewhere on the web (sorry don’t have the site name) I remember a comparison of 2 versions of strips with some dialogue being edited just to be shorter, not because there was anything offensive. To the owner of the site it looked like BB was rethinking the original–for the worse. Unless he ever deigns to tell us so, I guess we’ll never know for sure. Just my 2 pennies. :)

Just be grateful for the “girl” part! There’s nothing wrong with a deeper gene pool.

Strip was drawn about 20 years ago folks, not yesterday. You should have seen the fit my step-father had when Capt. Kirk kissed Uhura!!!!

I remember how the dialogue in the last panel of this strip was later rewritten (probably to avoid lawsuits from Jell-O):
Dad: “Chocolate?”
Binkley: “Fudge. Whatever.”
That’s how it appears in Bloom County: Loose Tails.

Back when this particular strip came out, I didn’t see what the big deal was. Then again, I was 15.
I also didn’t see what the big deal was on “Three’s Company”.

According to its introduction, Loose Tails has the originals. This strip should be the edited version printed in newspapers.

these are usually the edited versions
