I also remember looking at a book published for farmers in the 1930’s or 40’s. There was a snowfall on July 2 (or June 2) that covered Kansas (and other areas) ranging from 4” in the west to 2” in the east in the 1800’s. It was the result of a volcano eruption that blocked the sunlight and cooled everything for a few days.

Doing good–waiting for the snow to commence melting again. Luckily, they think the perfect melting weather will continue for a while. Unluckily, it might be a bit too cool and overcast days (and some snow?) so we won’t quite get optimal snowmelt.

1816 may of been the year as it was called The Year Without a Summer due to Mount Tambora errupting.

    See here for info.

The book I had was from the Kansas Extension Service I think. It had among other things monthly records and averages for every county and year of recorded history for temp., percipitation, wind, etc. in Kansas up to the time it was printed.

Maybe it was due to 1883 eruption of Krakatoa due to it’s later year and may of caused what was recorded in the book. The previous volcano may of been to early for the book recording and I think this seems to be better fitted to my memory of the time.

@Grog, it’s the parts West of the Missouri, plus up by Williston, maybe almost to Minot. The rest would, of course, be East Dakota.

We already have North-South Carolina–but never an East-West division. In fact, except for a short time when New Jersey colony was divided into East and West Provinces, no American colony or state was ever designated “East.”
