Oh are high today is 100° already 70°.
Starting June 1st don’t know how much I will be commenting on strips. I only have two months worth of summer class after this sometime in future I can do an Intership for summer not sure how this will work out with job marke. If like last one went bust.
Hi, friends!
Forecasted high is 99° today. I heard on the radio that if it reaches 100°F today, it will break a record for the earliest date to hit the century mark.
I went out this morning and watered the tomato plants. They’re going to need it with this weather!
Now that that is out of the way, good morning Tribe. I can’t believe how lucky we are with our (finally) spring time weather! It’s 42 (at 7:45), and was up to 61 yesterday. Raining right now…..another one of the “Moist Pacific Storms” as they say. Only this time, it’s rain instead of snow.
M’Lady - I love Lemon Meringue pie too! Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like anyone else in my family does, so it is a rare treat for me. There used to be a great restaurant (Tippins) in Wichita that served the best Lemon Meringue pie I ever have had. Unfortunately, they are no longer in business. I hear that some place in KC there’s a bakery using the same recipes, so if I ever get up that way, I may have to buy a pie. Hope I wouldn’t get sick if I ate the whole pie myself.
I buy the frozen pie (Marie Calendar’s) and let it defrost a little, then cut it into 8 slices, and put it back in the freezer, and eat one piece whenever the urge hits!!! They are really small sized pieces, so it doesn’t kill the weight loss.
M’Lady - Does that work if the pie isn’t frozen when you buy it? I’ve seen a lemon meringue pie that looked pretty good at Dillons (Krogers), but didn’t want to eat the whole thing in just a matter of days.
Since I’m probably looking at a “rest of my life” diet change, I know it needs to be one where I don’t feel too deprived. At least the instructions from the hospital cardiologist say that I need to eat some lean red meat, to keep from becoming anemic. That’s about the main kind I eat, unless I grab a hamburger somewhere. All of our beef and the beef served at our favorite restaurant is processed at a local meat locker. Their beef is the leanest and best tasting, especially compared to what you can buy in a grocery store.
I’m not near as crazy about pies as some people, so a small sliver is all I need to satisfy my craving. I started buying ice cream packaged in really small (3 oz.) cups, because that is just enough to satisfy my craving, without tempting me to eat more. I think tiny dessert portions are the best way to go for a life long diet.
Grog - At least we’ve got some breeze to help. Right now, it is 82°, 61% humidity, wind around 7 mph, but expected to get up around 20 mph. It would be really miserable if the humidity was higher, and the winds were calm. Of course, I’m most thankful for a/c!
janiegirl, this strip is in reruns now. It has been for a while I think. But at the time this strip was originally run, Rob was undergoing treatment to his eye. Other artists filled in to minimize the number of reruns shown at the time.
Hello Janiegirl - Welcome to the Big Top! Rob Harrell posted this last week;
Hey Tribe-
I just wanted to point out why these strips are by guest artists. Back in ‘06 when I had surgery for eye cancer, a group of insanely nice and talented cartoonists filled in for me for two weeks while I had surgery for (eye) cancer. Yesterday’s was by Mark Pett, today’s is by Glenn McCoy. If you have any questions about who the strips are by in the coming couple of weeks, I’ll try to stop by and answer questions. It’s an insanely cool list of cartoonists…
I can’t thank this group enough. With their help, I think we got through the whole ordeal with only a week of reruns.
In February, I reached my five year anniversary of the surgery and I’m still here - and I couldn’t be happier about that. Endless thanks to my colleagues, friends, family and my amazing wife for getting me through a horrible time.
And thanks to you all in ‘the tribe’ for showing up and making this a lively place every day. And for the breakfasts!
Hello all. SRmom most restaurants here I really can’t eat at. Appliebees has a lot of fat, Long Johns & KFC are like poison to me meaning way to much fat. We have been eating healthy here using ground turkey. I eat lite meals here and if I get hungry I live with this until meal time. So far 5 or 6 lbs lighter. I also exercise with machine. I’ve had 3 gliders that broke from use over 3 months time span.
Montana Lady that lemonmeringuee pie sound good to much has too much sugar. I’m not diabetic either. Bishops when they do this has asugarr free lime pie or cream pineapple pie that is great. My hubby has me spoiled onrecipe’ss he changes fat content that mostrestaurantss has too much fat.
Kab - We ate ground turkey for a while years ago. But I need to eat the red meat to keep from becoming anemic. I just cut off as much fat as possible, rinse the crumbled ground beef after it has been browned, blot grease on burgers, to cut down on the fat intake. It is much cheaper for us to eat beef too, since we buy it straight from the farmer.
I, too, will trim as much fat as I can from beef and pork. On those rare occasions when I buy ground beef, I buy the leanest I can find. But now that I’ve got a meat grinder, there’s really no need to buy ground beef - or pork.
When I buy frozen dinners fo lunch, I buy the ones with the lowest saturated fat & cholesterol levels.
I rarely go out to eat…..and I don’t often eat desert….especially chocolate. It’s also very high in cholesterol & fat, but I never was partial to it anyway.
Grog - Being finicky does help. Some desserts don’t even tempt me. I’ve decided to only have desserts I really like - no need to waste my calorie allotment on food that’s neither healthy nor delicious.
Hello before I go. Our church serves cookies after 1st service before Sunday school. I gave that up a long time ago and I don’t miss it. I take an iron pill for anemic. My metabolism doesn’t work that great so I have small meals and if I get hungry I can live with this. My weight is too high anyway and takes a lot to burn fat. Soon be time for me to leave.
Next year I hope I will inform Comp I instructor I’m not an and never will be an English major.
Place I work at big dept some area for clocking in has gone through thumb or hand prints and no time cards now looks like going to dept I’m at, I won’t have to we use time sheets.
Belated Comic Comment (specially imported for your enjoyment): I really don’t think Dusty should work without a net.
Current Comic Comment: Next they should go to see the Clown Doctor, and sniff his flower buttoneer to get spritzed off…
Still, the style of this guest artist doesn’t look too different from Rob.
Sounds like most of you have a handle on healthy eating! I’ve just started this year, with small, small “meals”, and very small portions! That way, I can have some sweets, or even pizza without feeling deprived with other low fat items.
I, too have a meat grinder, and because I have the time, I do my own ground beef, and ground pork. That way I can have breakfast “sausage” without the fat and no salt.
Most of our local “mom and pop” restaurants will cook food to order, with no salt and very low fat. Chains……….we never go there!
Someone help me! I’ve been trying to get things ready for a garage sale in about a week and a half, but I keep thinking or reasons why I might need or use this stuff someday. I haven’t needed or used it so far, but…………
Serenasakitty, I wish I could help. I am trying to get rid of some of my books. It seems to be a very slow process, probably because I keep reading the books?
I myself am beginning to think the key to getting rid of stuff is never getting it in the first place.
Thanks for the suggestion Pseudough I had something like that a few years ago when our house burned down. No one was hurt but we lost nearly everything. As far as getting rid of stuff, it didn’t help too much. Stuff still accumulates and In no time I was back where I started.
Hi, psuedo, serena & MeBeGood!
Just got back from the pharmacy, I’m glad we’ve got insurance to pay most of it.
My final is today, starting at 4, so I’ll be heading out soon.
Serena - Funny you should mention that. This morning I got back to cleaning the books off my shelves, and trying to decide what I just can’t part with, and which ones I can. The homeschooling used book sale is a week from Friday, so I hope I can get ready in time. If not, I’ll sell what I can and rent another table next year. These are mostly used books I bought or was given, some I used, most I haven’t. Found a neat old book, trying to decide if I can let it go or not. A pictorial (with captions of course) of the “European War” (a/k/a WWI) - printed in 1916.
Pseudough, at the prices they charge for software? I doubt it will put them out of business, it is really too bad that with not enough money for education in the first place the textbooks cost so much.
I didn’t weigh my daughter’s backpack (I was afraid). 30 pounds sounds about right and that was when she was in middle school and weighed about 80 pounds. She also refused to wear a coat to school because the lockers were too small and inevitably inconveniently located.
Pseudough, it will probably take longer than that, because of politics. Which is a Voodoo Subject in the Big Top. So….. we should probably leave it there. Otherwise I will have to find out who swiped my grape jelly gun and shoot myself.
Psuedo - The prices for college textbooks are obscene. With homeschooling, my kids didn’t tote backpacks much until college. I’d be using one with wheels, if I had to haul more than one textbook at a time. I haven’t noticed any lockers, so everyone hauls their coats to class with them.
I haven’t bothered to get a Nook, Kindle, etc., as I usually borrow the books I read for pleasure from a library. However, if college textbooks started being offered that way (at less than buying it in print), I’d sure consider it, depending on the course. The oldest is taking his last “core” class, and I think he wants to keep all his books for his major (computer web design). But the youngest has a way to go, so if it happened soon, I’d at least investigate buying them that way.
Thanks! I also found out today that my PowerPoint presentation got all 100 points possible, so it has been a great day academically.
Woke up with what seems to be another (my 4th) case of diverticulitis, so I’m on some potent antibiotics as a result. Maybe I’ll get lucky and they’ll fix whatever is causing my chest pain? I can dream, can’t I?
Rmom, I was lucky to buy used texts on occasion. There was some pretty big savings there….of course we couldn’t go that route if the text was a newly printed one though.
I’ve had diverticilitis, too, Rmom, which is another reason why I watch what I eat. But I found that the medication would give about as much if not more discomfort than I already had like a huge gas build-up. I was glad when the medication was done with.
Grog - I always try to get the used texts when possible. What is causing a lot of expense is paying through the nose for an “access” code for a class. Those can’t be reused, so it takes $30-$50 for a stupid piece of cardboard with a special code printed on it. I understand the benefits of the access code, I just don’t understand why they cost so stinking much.
My Dad had diverticulitis, just he was a lot older before he started getting it. I’m not sure what prompted this last bout, as I try to be careful about what I eat that can cause it. I don’t remember a huge amount of gas, just don’t like the idea of killing the good bacteria with the bad. But the pain is bad enough, that I can’t ignore it and hope its goes away on its own. Taking antibiotics with food (if allowed) is the best way to reduce gas, etc.
One of the things I’ve tried to do is reduce my portions of meat. It’s relatively easy to do until you have to do a lot of dining out - sometimes a necessary evil of buiness travel
Grog - Most of the time, my hubby books his own reservation, and can choose his hotel. He usually picks a Choice Hotel, because we get a great discount with an organization we belong to, and he racks up points for free rooms, which we can use for vacations. They usually have small fridges & microwaves, but he will usually eat most everything in one sitting, so for his business travel, it isn’t as important.
Hi, Wolfie!Grog - I’m the same way, but no one has told me to eat more often. I’m amazed at how much more my hubby can pack away before he feels miserable.

I don’t have a grape jelly gun, but I could let you borrow my mint jelly gun.

GROG Premium Member over 13 years ago

When I’m on business travel, I don’t usually have access to a refridgerator - unless I travel alone. When I go with my boss, he chooses the hotel.
When I travel alone or on vacation I can get a place with a kitchen.

No matter how much I like the food, I can usually only eat about half a plate. I am supposed to eat smaller servings in more feeding intervals.
