I taught classes on PC hardware and software to adult students being retrained by a phone company. The company supplied most everything the students needed; books, tuition, a laptop, all software etc.. One student was having problems with the drive in his laptop so we opened it up. We were greeted by the rich aroma of coffee! There were stains on the drive where the coffee had dried.
That was my job for 27 glorious years, fixing PC Problems. I absolutely loved that job, but I do have some pretty weird stories… One DVD Drive story is from my own boss’s PC. He called me in and told me he had put a disc in the drive and it had emitted a terrible noise and the drive door would no longer open. Well, the disc had actually exploded inside as it spun up. I don’t think he did anything wrong, however. But here’s the weird part; After I managed to pick out all the pieces of the shattered DVD (some sharp!), I tried another, (expendable) disc, and it worked perfectly! I never did know what caused the initial cataclysm…
It has been a very long time since I’ve heard the coffee holder disk drive gag. It was several years after the tech support person on the phone tells someone to close the door, meaning the disk drive door, and they hear the caller get up and close the office door. I always imagined the sound of a creaky office chair somewhere during the call.
It was all made easier when the 3.5 inch disks replaced (gradually) the 5.25 inch floppies. When the 5 meg hard drives showed up, yet another new era dawned.
My most recent computer I got as a “refurbished” as I usually do. It was harder to get either DVD drive or full tower. I had to settle for a mini-tower with a vertically-oriented DVD drive.

wait … hold on now … the thing in the car is a cup holder??? i’ve been using it to play music!!! just thought my cds were bad …
