The word “one” has been used for hundreds of years as a non-gender-specific personal pronoun. It may sound a little awkward but not as dumb as all these suggested alternatives.
In “Doc” Smith’s LENSMAN space opera, the planet Lyrane was ruled by a Matriarchy where everyone’s pronoun was “it”. And being male was NOT conducive to good health!
