GM’s president worked her way up from “the bottom” but companies don’t really do that anymore. It’s much cheaper for most companies to contract out the various parts of their labor force. Not only does it ensure that nobody sticks around long enough to challenge the power structure, but it also keeps workers from advancing their careers!
