From a book I read about the missionaries upon arriving in Hawaii and trying to put the ten commandments into terms the islanders could understand and accept one of them told the minister they could not say “Thou shalt not commit adultery” that they would have name all the different kinds of adultery or some would say “that kind does not apply to us” or “we can try a different one”.
The solution? “Thou shalt not sleep mischievously”.
