Martin Shkreli raised the price of a 62 year-old drug, Daraprim, an anti-parasitic drug, from $13.50 a tablet to $750. Private equity at its finest. This occurred shortly after Shkreli won the auction for Wu-Tang Clan’s album, Once Upon A Time in Shaolin, where only a single copy was sold and the album could only be released publicly in the year 2103. Shkreli paid approximately $2 million for the rights.
Months later, Shkreli was arrested and subsequently convicted for securities fraud, sentenced to seven years in prison, and had to forfeit rights to the album as part of the sentencing. He was released in 2022 after 4 years.
