I was the oldest of eight kids. I went to Boy Scout camp one year. I was having a great old time, archery, riflery, swimming in the lake, cooking over the open fire, etc. One of the troop was the only child of a single mother, which wasn’t terribly common in those days. He was so homesick. He sat in his tent and moped all day. His mother finally came and got him. At one point they had a kind of gathering of all the scouts, which family could come to. This was about a 2 hour drive from the city. Guys asked me if my family was coming, I said, “Uh, I don’t think so.” I figured they were just as happy not to have me around as vice versa.
