Elly: Sure I gave him some hints, Anne! I said - buy me something frivolous, and expensive - something I can show off to my friends... I guess it was just a failure to communicate... I was thinking suede coat - while he was thinking dishwasher.

I would MUCH rather have a new dishwasher than a suede coat–besides, do you know how much it costs to clean those things? Suede and small children are not a good combination!

Absolutely you can show it off to your friends - especially if it encourages John to do the dishes.

I would be in 7th heaven if DH got me a dishwasher. Sure beats nothing, which is what I usually get.

Hmmm, let’s see - drop half a month’s pay on a machine to wash your dishes. But you still have to wash the dishes before you put them into te dishwasher.
How is that not frivolous?

Buying her a dishwasher reinforces the idea that the housework is all her responsibility. He should be helping since housework and child care is a 24/7 responsibility while his job is only 8 hours 5 days a week.

Best cartoonist in the world (in my opinion, mind!). The expressions on the faces of the parents on 24 December were so real… and the one on Christmas day? Nobody does expressions like this lady…

On the flip side, my husband can never figure it out when his mom does NOT want to get him something wonderfully practical. Seventh heaven to him is a set of impact wrenches. It makes his mom want to gag. Men and women DO think differently.
