Both my folks left for work shortly after getting me out of bed, and well before I had to catch the bus. If I missed it, I had to ride my bike to school … which I did any number of times. Which was safe enough back in the 1950s and 60s.
I walked many blocks to my first Grade School and to the home of a woman running a Day-Care in her home after school; walked many blocks to (and from) my second Grade School; walked one long block to my third Grade School; walked many blocks to (and from) my first Junior High School; walked across a very large field (both ways), with hills and a creek running through it (and sometimes a grumpy bull); walked many blocks to (and from) my only High School, then rode my bike to and from that same High School when we moved farther away. Those were the days! ☺
In Austin you have to live 2+ miles from the school for bus service so there are very few/no students living that distance from a grade/middle school, hence no bus service.

I lived in Marin County where the mothers would cut-off the nearly empty school buses in their huge SUVs to get that one kid to school on time.
