True story: One time when I was a sub, before I had my own route, I had been filling in on this route for 3-4 months when Christmas came around. This guy came out and was asking me questions if I were the regular carrier. After explaining the situation he asked, “So you have been doing the route?” I said, “Yes” expecting a complaint about something. He said, “Well Merry Christmas!” and slapped a $10 bill in my hand. I didn’t know what to do. I was so new I wasn’t sure if I could accept it. So I stood there hemming and hawing and finally said, “Well thank you.” Then as he was walking away, “Have a good day.” Then a bit later, “Merry Christmas!”
I was so pumped I wasn’t paying attention where I was going when I went into his neighbor’s yard that I stepped in the biggest pile of dog ______ that you ever saw. Then I realized that’s what life is like. One minute you’re on top of the world, the next minute you’re in a big old pile of _______.

A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. A mown lawn ends after about 3700.
