It is usually Dad who is sarcastic. This has to be the first time I have seen Mom so. Moms are never really sarcastic and this is especially out of character for Calvin’s Mom. Did you make a mistake Bill?
Calvin might be a bit late: Lucy the Australopithecus and Mitochondrial Eve are already known to scientists. But I doubt Mom would like being called the Missing Link !
If you’re telling him to clean up his room, Mom, you’re going to have to be less subtle. You’ll have to pick him up and carry him in there like you did last week when he refused to go to bed. Then stand over him and watch his every movement.
We all know Calvin isn’t interested in the usual topics such as biology, math, geography. He only cares about extraordinary things such as transmogrifiers ( in which he already achieved a lot of experience) and now palaeontology. I wonder what he’ll discover ……… parts of the “Calvinosaurus” perhaps ?
I think I remember this strip - he assembles a bunch of stuff he finds in the back yard… still, it is rather amusing how Watterson tries to educate people while making them laugh. Avante garde art, quantum mechanics, multiple art styles, aviation, history, film noir, dinosaurs, tigers… you could get quite a varied education just reading this stuff.
Of course, Tyrannosaurs never flew F-15s (see another strip about that one), so it’s a toss-up.
The “missing link” is named Ida. She’s 47 million years old. She was found near Darmstadt, Germany. The find was announced last month. And here I thought Curly Q. Link was the “missing link”! Nyuk, nyuk nyuk!
Once again, kudos to any child who know the word “Australopithecus”, can spell it and use it in a sentence. Today’s child would be impressive if they could spell “shovel”.
Nice come back Calvin, the only cost is probably going to bed hungry. I remember once I thought my mom was older than she really was. That was awkward.
I agree with you Wolfbyte.
Whereas Dad is pretty much resigned to Calvin’s antics, Mom appears to always be in control of the situation…. Always. Calvin with his “Dad poll” but never trying to test Mom. I suppose she means business, and Cal knows it!
Hi all I’m new to posting, just got set up a few days ago. mrprongs he knows his parents names but can you imagine the fall out of him calling them by it!! I tried it ..once.. and only once!
In real life (at least had it been like mine), Calvin would never have made it to the backyard after a retort like that. And he would’ve deserved the detention.
But then, this is Calvin & Hobbes, not real life: a place where a kid gets to say everything he wishes he could get away with. Some days I can laugh at that, and some days I wonder what Bill W. was thinking…and I can think those two totally different things about the same strip on different days (or hours, or even minutes).

amberlight - his mom has been sarcastic before: once she told Calvin that it wasn’t rice he was eating but maggots!
There was another time when he was hungry but she was busy so she gave him a map to the refrigerator! Moms rule!

Charlie, thanks for the extra info.
How funny—Calvin’s major discovery would be displayed in some major museum as “Mom”.
