I thought school busses today are required to have seat belts. When was this strip done?

Having ridden on buses and subway cars for the majority of my life never in my experience have I seen a passenger seat belt. obviously, no one reading this strip has been on public transportation for awhile.

Pretty sure a ‘53 Chevrolet bus didn’t have seat belts for the driver…

In the fall of 1949 when my dad bought a new Plymouth. He then went to te small local airport and bought seatbelts from Cessna. He installed them and we did not back out of the garage without our seatbelts fastened. I was 3 years old.

I love Rover’s sense of protection, but I’m pretty sure Red finally got on the bus – seatbelts or none! I rode a lot of busses to college and back (late 1960s to 1970s), and always felt a bit insecure. So Rover’s concern is understood!

My seat belt was Mom’s arm every time she stepped on the brakes.

BTW, I just love seeing those old school buses. It immediately throws me back to my childhood.

California, Florida, Louisiana, New Jersey, New York, and Texas require school bus seat belts.

Mom drove bus. You can be looming authority and small kids probably will wear them, but as they get older they do what they want. Get them a monitor person. Bus holds 80 kids. You drive in traffic with that going on in back of you.

Money never does, especially when it’s used as an excuse for ignoring the value of Childrens lives and safety.

yeah, why aren’t there any seat belts on school buses? I thought the NTSB was all for child safety, NOT the less cost to school bus manufacturers!

Read all comments, but really have to agree with LucyRudy. I remember riding buses with steel grab bars on top of seat in front of me. Often wondered what it would be like to hit one of those in an accident! Vehicles have automatic everything now…why not automatic safety belts? Or a lap-bar, like on a carnival ride?
