Sally looks at a bird in a tree and asks Linus, "How do birds sleep on tree limbs without falling off?"<BR><BR> Snoopy sleeps on his doghouse. Linus walks up with Sally and says, "They have muscles in their feet which automatically contract when they fall asleep."<BR><BR> Linus says, "The same principle applies with Snoopy's ears . . ."<BR><BR> Snoopy sits up and thinks, "I didn't know that!"<BR><BR>

It must have developed instinctively; the first couple of attempts to sleep up there didn’t go at all well, as I recall.
