The best experience I ever had on hold was a short-lived experiment by âGateway Computersâ back in the 90âs, I think it was. The music was âSurf/Beachâ, and there was a Surfer Girl acting as a DJ. It was great!
Reminds me of a story on This American Life, where an 81 year old man was crazy about the hold music when he called various providers in his healthcare system. He spent a long time trying to learn more about it. Turned out it was the default hold music on Cisco phone systems, and he and a librarian were eventually able to find the composer. I love good driveway stories like that one.
Last week I spent 2 hours and 44 minutes on hold, waiting to speak to a live person at Social Security to fix something. After leading with that comment, she replied that someone she had just spoken with was on for over 3 hours!It was the most annoying hold music because the loop was ânot quiteâ seamless and my musicial sensibility was irritated approximately every 45 seconds.

I actually did this once and then bought the CD.
