Oliver Wendell Jones is precociously talented, no doubt, but his “Buicks or bombs” philosophy could get his dad into really hot water with the feds. They don’t have much of a sense of humor….
Yes, Lewreader, I see them clearly. I have a bead on the lead one. He must be in charge. Our forefathers were not afraid to speak out clearly or take necessary action and neither am I. It is our Republic only so long as we can keep it.
“It’s the 1980s. We already have enough bombs to wipe out the world several times over, and an Alzheimer-ridden president who’ll probably push the button just to see what it does. A few more bombs won’t make any difference, so let’s spend our last few days not being thieves; that way we’ll get into heaven and never have to see Ronnie again.”
Doctor Toon, that only means it will take me a little longer than I had originally planned. You never say it can’t be done or you’ll never find a way to do it. The correct thing to say is “how can I do it”. Then go do it.
Hey Sherlock, apparently you missed the part where the “Alzheimer-ridden president” never fired those missiles, nor dropped those bombs, the Berlin wall came crashing down, and the Soviet Union was disestablished. Amazing how those little details escaped you.
So we STILL have the the historically-inaccurate claim that Reagan was the Great Destroyer of communism? I think some facts have escaped some people (as well as the FACT that even Reagan’s inner circle have said publicly that Donald Regan was the de facto president for much of Reagan’s presidency, after the de facto president Ed Meese became Attorney General in 1985).
Ah, but remember: At the time this strip was written, all that was in the fantasy cloud of a very uncertain “future”.
Ever heard the joking sound-check Reagan did, that went out live? “Ladies and gentlemen, I have just signed a law declaring the Soviet Union illegal. The bombing will commence in five minutes.”
Just hilarious. I know people who just loved the old man, but he was selling us GE in the ’70s, and kept on in the ’80s. He was very good at it.
The worst was the nutcases he surrounded himself with, that Poppy Bush was just barely able to keep in check, and W hired back and turned loose in his reign.
We’ve still got a lot of clean-up to do after that.
Ushindi, I made no claim as to whether Reagan was the great destroyer of communism or not. I simply stated what happened on his watch. If Clinton can get credit for the “balanced budget”…well, I think you can see where I’m going so I won’t spell it out in three part harmony with circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back of each one etc…

The only real moral dilemma we have is our federal government. If we get rid of the government we get rid of the dilemma along with it.

Explain it to Oliver this way, Mr. Jones:
“It’s the 1980s. We already have enough bombs to wipe out the world several times over, and an Alzheimer-ridden president who’ll probably push the button just to see what it does. A few more bombs won’t make any difference, so let’s spend our last few days not being thieves; that way we’ll get into heaven and never have to see Ronnie again.”
