The “gazed up” bit is obviously showing how this airhead is still lost in her little fantasy of what she expects MJ to be like, not really thinking about the reality presented to her, ie, smell of herring guts and “MJ” being a short little critter with a huge honker. Therein the humor is supposed to lie.
